In particular, the prosperous city of Ephesus in ionia (on the aegean coast of turkey) adopted the bee as its civic emblem. Ephesus was the location of a famous temple of the goddess Artemis (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.) the priestesses were called Melissae (honeybees).
