Lady Justice originated in Rome when emperor Augustus introduced the goddess Justitia, the goddess of justice. She symbolizes the virtue of justice and has been adopted as the personification of the moral code within our judicial system. In one hand she holds a sword, representing justice, and in the other hand the scales, which represent balance. Lady Justice appears blindfolded because, as we all know, justice is blind.
